PRESCRIBING INFORMATION

PRESENTATION AND FORM Powder for oral suspension, Box of 10, 30, and 60 sachets.

COMPOSITION Dioctahedral Smectite ... 3.000g. Excipients q.s. for a sachet weighing 3.760g.

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES Due to its leaflet structure and its high plastic viscosity, smecta® possesses a powerful coating property on the gastrointestinal mucosa. By interacting with glycoproteins of mucus, smecta® increases the resistance of the mucosal gel in response to aggressive agents. By its action on the gastrointestinal mucous barrier and its high binding capacity, smecta® protects the gastrointestinal mucosa. smecta® is radiolucent, does not colour stools and, at usual doses, does not modify the physiological intestinal transit time.

PHARMACOKINETIC PROPERTIES smecta® is not absorbed. It is eliminated through the faeces.

THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS Symptomatic treatment of irritable Bowel Syndrome in adults and gastroesophageal reflux in infant due to mucoprotective effects. Treatment of acute and chronic diarrhoea.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION In children: under tha ge of 1 year: 1 sachet per day, from 1 to 2 years: 1 to 2 sachets per day, over the age of 2 years: 2 to 3 sachets per day (To be administered in 2 – 3 divided doses). The contents of the sachet can be mixed in a bottle with 50ml of water or with a semi-liqui: broth, stewed fruit, mashed vegetables, baby food. In adults: An average of 3 sachets in 2-3 divided doses per day mixed in half a glass of water. In acute diarrhoea, the daily dosage can be doubled at the beginning of treatment. Administer preferably after meals in oesophagitis, in between meals in other indications.

STORAGE CONDITIONS AND SHELF LIFE To be stored in a dry place. Do not exceed the expiry date plainly indicated on the packaging. Keep out of reach of children. For further information, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.
